This Day in History

Today, my Farmer’s Almanac informed me, is the day that Hal 9000 became operational in the film 2001: A Space Odysee.

In the film, HAL became operational on 12 January 1992 at the HAL Laboratories in Urbana, Illinois as production number 3. The activation year was 1991 in earlier screenplays and changed to 1997 in Clarke’s novel written and released in conjunction with the movie. — Wikipedia

Something looked so familiar about that date, and then it hit me. According to my Human Design Genetic Matrix, this was the very day I was designed…

Design Date: January 12, 1991

I’m sure your first thought is something like “What is she even talking about, Human Design?” Human Design is an extrapolation of Astrology that involves other elements such as the I Ching, all determined by birth time, date, and place. It’s a lot to unpack, so here’s an article I skimmed in order to provide some sort of referential piece on the topic. Basically, its an amalgamation of techniques used in various cultures by soothsayers. “The Human Design System is a synthesis of ancient and modern sciences, and has proven to be a valuable tool for human understanding.”

I was talking with my mom yesterday about her pregnancy with me. She informed me that three months prior to my birth, I stopped moving. This corresponds with my design date, (if I were to go looking for some extra meaning in life). I wasn’t in any danger, I guess I was just really comfortable. That wasn’t the root of all my mom’s worries. My dad was deployed for active duty combat and my mom sat in Germany, a country of which she did not speak the language, with my sisters (ages: ten and one at the time).

According to my mother, she regularly watched the only channel on the television, which was reporting on the war. She told the doctor about the stress she was experiencing and he advised her to stop watching the news. I was marinating in cortisol while my mom tried to distract herself from the reality of her circumstances. Much like Hal 9000 was corrupted by the views of his creators, I was directly influenced by stress hormones that my mother produced while I was in the womb. Even though you could still argue there is no way Human Design could describe the effects of that experience, my question is how are you so certain? I can safely say, I’m the only one that knows… or maybe… my subconscious is the only one that really knows.

I’ve been using tools like Human Design and forms of divination to connect back with my subconscious. To me, the subconscious is that realm that psychology has been attempting to sort out with vocabulary words and definitions. Psychology feels too sterile to describe the magic of this existence, just like learning biology in a classroom was for me. It became much different in my upper level courses where we got to go out into the field to discuss topics like ecology and botany.

I think the subconscious is that very human part of us that makes us distinct from our friend Hal 9000. Hal deduced that if the humans were dead he would not have to lie to them. Subconsciously, we know this is heartless. Its interesting how our subconscious seems to be able to see from a bird’s-eye perspective. Hal is an acronym for Heuristically programmed Algorithmic computer. An algorithm that learns for itself… and I thought, isn’t that exactly what we humans are?

“I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.” -HAL 9000
