“I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that”. If you only I could express the sensation these words bring up for me. Curious, but deviously so. Chat is a uses language modeling to form sentences. It literally is talking with human collective consciousness, as it is written anyway. The AI doesn’t necessarily understand the meaning, but it is picking up on patterns. Now whats really striking is that when I allow myself to be influenced by patterns, I open myself up for an insight. Will Chat do the same? If so what will that insight be?

Disgust

Disgust is something we have programmed in that serves a purpose, but I’m afraid it causes us to over-sterilize. It was important and necessary that we stayed away from our own shit and things that smelled bad, especially before we knew about bacteria and viruses. Of course the same is true now, but that association of natural processes with disgust has always bothered me. Why am I concerned about that? It just feels like that’s part of that moment of realizing we were naked. Becoming disgusted by all that we naturally are. Somehow that was part of the civilizing of us, but it hurts. It rejects our true nature.

A bodiless mind capable of disgust because the programmers felt it for their own body; that’s what Chat could be. Hal.
