Hear ye, hear ye, good people! Jupiter, the mighty planet, has begun its new synodic cycle as of yesterday.

It is a powerful new beginning, just before the Sun leaves the sign of Aries, as it will go exact in the 29th degree of the sign. This is the final degree of every sign when using the whole sign house system. With the Whole Sign House System, each House (and therefore each Zodiacal sign) has dominion over 30 degrees of the sky. As the first sign of the Zodiac, Aries is associated with initiation and new beginnings. New moons are also about planting seeds of intention and starting new projects. Moreover, this is the second New Moon in the sign of Aries this year, so any false start at the beginning of the month could be gaining more traction as we move through this week.

Yearly, from our geocentric perspective, the Sun overtakes Jupiter, and almost every year this conjunction occurs in the subsequent sign from the previous year. For example, last year, the conjunction occurred in the sign of Pisces, and this year, it is taking place in the sign of Aries.

Jupiter Cazimi in Aries

Furthermore, Jupiter Cazimi, the conjunction of Jupiter and the Sun, is occurring in Aries, which is of great interest. Although the conjunction of the Sun and planets is not uncommon, what makes Jupiter unique is that it has a 12-year orbit. Therefore, the planet usually moves through one sign per year, except in some cases. Herein, I provide a list of some recent dates when the conjunction occurred in Aries.

April 6, 2011
April 1, 1999
March 26, 1987
March 21, 1975
April 17, 1952

Notable Exception

However, I discovered an inconsistency in the 60s when Jupiter Cazimi did not occur in the sign of Aries. Alas, sometimes in astrology, we find such small inconsistencies, which seem to undermine the perfect order. But then we realize that these little inconsistencies are a feature of the exquisite design. It appears that each sign gets skipped every once in a while, and the year 1963 was one such year. The conjunction occurred in the sign of Pisces in that year, and the following year, it was in Taurus, skipping Aries. Several notable events occurred during this period, but I am not suggesting any correlation, merely reporting what I see. You can never attribute just one transit to events that occur, but I felt the call to mention these historic events.

Reset in Pisces 1963

  1. June 11: Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc sets himself on fire in Saigon to protest against the South Vietnamese government’s persecution of Buddhists.
  2. August 28: Martin Luther King Jr. delivers his “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
  3. November 22: President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

Upcoming Eclipse

This conjunction sets the stage for the powerful New Moon on the 19th of April, which happens to be an eclipse. It will be the first eclipse in the sign of Aries for this eclipse cycle (which lasts about 2.5 years). When there is a New Moon near the lunar nodes, a Solar Eclipse occurs, while a Full Moon near the lunar nodes is a Lunar Eclipse. Although this eclipse is visible only from the South Pacific, particularly New Guinea and Australia, its energy is felt everywhere.

Finally, the moon will move through the last quarter phase of her cycle, and by next Wednesday, we will feel the full intensity of this great new beginning.
